Bedok Corner sits on what was once Kampong Bedok Laut and Kampong Bedok Darat, Malay fishing and farming villages founded in the 1850s — one started by a young fisherman from Johor Lama, the other by a farmer from Java. Villagers here worked plantations, fished, and later served the British army base at Changi, while upscale restaurants and beachside holiday homes once dotted the area too. That kampong heritage lives on in nearby street names — Jalan Haji Salam, Jalan Bilal, Jalan Kathi — and in the food centre itself, where most of its 31 stalls serve halal food, a direct legacy of the Malay villages that once stood here.

Once two Malay fishing kampongs founded in the 1850s, this stretch still carries its heritage in street names like Jalan Haji Salam — and in a food centre that's mostly halal.
